It’s an exciting world out there. Just Google “jobs” and thousands of opportunities become immediately available. In fact, despite the poor job statistics, finding a job online is easier than ever.

Not all jobs offered online are the get rich quick schemes that you see all the time. Some are simply ways to make ends meet, part-time opportunities for someone who can spend a few hours a day on their computer.

Some of the most common online opportunities involve filling out surveys, multi-level marketing schemes, website design, and freelance writing.

All of these jobs are growing online—and are dependent on the existence of the internet to survive. What are they and how do they work?

—Multi-level marketing. Also known as MLMs, these are businesses that abound on the web. What are they? It’s a method of selling a product that requires you to not only sell the product but also to recruit people to sell the same product. MLMs often sell computer software, self-improvement books or educational materials.

Typically, the more people your website recruits to join the MLM, the more money you make because you get a piece of every sale made by your recruits.

Ignore the “easy” money hype—be ready to work. You should do your homework whenever you put money toward anything by talking to the people who are involved. , The bottom line is that MLMs can be an option to make some extra cash, but you must go into it with realistic goals. And if you do invest your money, make certain to invest your time.

—Filling out surveys. Yes, you really can make money filling out surveys. This is one of those jobs that look like a scam, but isn’t. The scam is when sites promise that you’ll be able to retire doing it.

Filling out surveys is probably more fun than lucrative for the vast majority of those signing on to such sites. Free survey sites abound on the internet. If you want to do this, read up on them all. Find which ones pay in cash or simply give out coupon or only allow you to enter into a contest to win money.

—Freelance writers are also finding real jobs online. And they’re probably finding more jobs there than in the “real” world. Opportunities abound for writers, thanks to the proliferation of blogs and websites that are replacing traditional forms of media. In addition, traditional writing jobs are also available, but allow writers to work from their homes. Job hunters can find hundreds of job listings for sites that focus entirely on writers.

While the pay initially does not seem as lucrative as a job at a traditional magazine, which can pay hundreds of dollars for a feature-length story, it is possible to make a decent wage. Many blogs sites pay just a few dollars per story, but they are quick, snappy stories that are easy to write.
